EMBO 5th international workshop for science teachers
The European Molecular Biology Organization announces its 5th International Workshop for secondary school science teachers, which will take place from 11 13 May 2006 in Heidelberg, Germany. Its title is "From school to University".
Each year we change the focus of the workshop to cover new aspects of biology education. This time we are focusing mainly on the critical transition from secondary school to university. The questions are: what knowledge and skills do school-leavers need in order to embark on a university degree in the biosciences, and later turn into good researchers? What knowledge do they have to have, and more importantly, what analytical thinking must they develop at school? We will address current deficits as well as looking at some examples of best practise in Europe and beyond, and positive developments in curriculum design and teacher training.
There will, as usual, be scientific talks, an exhibition of education resources and hands-on practical experiments (the latter organised by our colleagues in EMBL1s ELLS, and in the Explo-Heidelberg teaching laboratory).
We are inviting a mixture of participants from the following principal groups:
Practising biology teachers
People involved in designing curricula, creating initiatives for modernising teaching, developing resources for the classroom, policy makers and ministry representatives etc.
Language of the workshop: English.
The workshop is free of charge.
