Dr. Michael S. Arvanitis was born in Athens in 1976. He holds a Bsc in Applied Mathematics (University of Athens), a PgD in Risk and Technology Management (National Technical University of Athens), a PgD in Business
and Innovation Intelligence (Universite de Caen) and a PhD in applied geophysics (University of Patras). He also holds a diploma in literary translation from CTL and a diploma in professional translation from the CEFTP. He has worked as researcher at the National Observatory of Athens, University of Thessaloniki and the University of Athens. For more than three years he was lecturer in Project and Software Management at the City University (WA). He is the managing director of Geomorph Instruments, president of the Greek regional section of Euroscience (the National Contact Point of “Science in Society” action, 7th Framework Programme of the European Union) and expert of the Greek Ministry of development in regional development funding schemes. He has managed more than twenty international research projects, has published more than thirty papers in international journals and conferences, has published one, edited two and translated five books. Elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical society, he is expert of the EDA (European Defense Agency) and INTAS, with a strong science communication background (has launched in Greece the “Teach your mum, teach your dad”, “Ready, set, photo” projects, both awarded a Netdays distinction, “Accessibility to Knowledge” awarded the prestigious Apajh Trophy, “Week of Scientific book”, “Give PC a chance”, several other activities including competitions, workshops and events and has participated in the successful “Café Scientifique” project, and as a member of the Jury at the “2nd International Science Film Festival”). Member of the Translations Committee of SEG and invited member of AAAS. He speaks English, French, German, Italian and Greek and has a basic knowledge of Russian, Turkish and Jewish.
