Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI)
Since 1969, every summer approximately 75 highly talented high school graduates from around the world participate in a month-long program at the Weizmann Institute. The first three weeks are dedicated to actual research, getting hands-on experience in one of today’s cutting-edge fields of research led by professionals in fields such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and mathematical and computer sciences. Students are individually mentored in laboratories with sophisticated equipment and participate in lectures presented by senior scientists in topics such as robotics, gene therapy and brain research and get to visit the state of art on-campus facilities.
Upon completion of their laboratory work, the students give an oral presentation and submit a written scientific report on their research.
The final week of the program is spent at a field school in the Judean Desert by the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the surface of the earth, well below sea level. The expert guides lead hikes through the millennia of history at different levels of intensity that acquaint the participants with the ecological, geographical, geological, zoological and archeological characteristics of the region.
This program also offers social activities, discussion groups and tours of Israel.
Students from the UK, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine were among the European participants of past ISSI.
