High Schoolers at the FEBS Young Scientist Forum
FEBS Young Scientist Forum was held from July 5-7, 2007 in Vienna, Austria. This professional event aims to provide Ph.D. students and young postdoctoral fellows with opportunities to meet, make friends as well as to discuss scientific affairs and career development in a friendly and informal atmosphere. For the first time 4 selected high school students from NYEX member organizations could attend to the Forum. The students were selected by the YSF2007 Organizing Committee and their participation cost was covered by NYEX.
Tereza Zavrelova: My FEBS conference- Young Scientist Forum
From 4th to 7th of July I was in Vienna for the 7th Young Scientist Forum. The conference was performed in the luxurious place of Hotel Hilton Danube. It was a small conference for Ph.D. and post-doc students. Here they have a chance to present their scientific work. The conference was divided for five symposiums: Systems Biology, Signaling, Structure, Disease and Molecular Clocks and Cell Cycle. There were three poster sessions and also four keynote speakers and a special programme called Round table about career possibilites. On Friday, July 6 was organized a special dinner in a traditional Viennese heurigen (restaurant).
This year it was for the first time, when YSF give a chance to high school students. If they wanted to participate they had to apply with Curriculum Vitae, Motivation letter and Abstract about their work. Four students were chosen by the YSF2007 Organizing Committee to participate and present their posters with other participants. It was for us the first experience with international conference.
Tereza Zavrelova (student from Czech Republic, works at Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, v.v.i. Her work's topic: Computational protein modeling; modeling of intracellular and extracellular protein structure and interactions. Supervisior: Dr. Lucie Kolacna, Ph.D.): It was for me the best scientific experience yet. I was very happy that I was chosen from so many other students. This conference gave me a chance to meet many interesting and intelligent people who gave me a new perspective on scientific work. I also had a chance to present my own work as a poster and this gave me a possibility to talk with scientists about problems, which interest me very much. I can´t complain: it was perfect and I hope that it wasn´t my last conference.
